Lessons and Carols

Why you should come

We are a church that loves to sing and eat together! Lessons and carols is a helpful way for us to do exactly that. On December 18 at Rivendell School (5700 Lee Hwy, Arlington, VA 22207) at 10am we will worship together with nine lessons from God’s Holy Scripture which will walk us through the good news of God’s plan of restoration for His creation. And then after we finish praising God by hearing His word and by singing, we will have lunch together (because we love to sing. . .and eat). This is a perfect service to bring friends and neighbors and all are welcome–so feel free to invite folks! If you have any questions, please contact us.

Why nine lessons and carols

The tradition began in the late 19th century when Bishop Edward Benson (the bishop of Truro who would later become the archbishop of Canterbury) held a service of 9 lessons and carols on Christmas Eve in a building serving as a temporary cathedral as the cathedral of Truro was being rebuilt (see more here). The popularity of this service spread throughout England, but it was made popular when, to celebrate the end of WWI in 1918, it was sung by the boy’s choir at King’s College in Cambridge. This service of 9 lessons punctuated by one or two hymns which served together to tell the good news of the story of Christmas.
