Small Groups

Welcome to Ascension Small Groups!

Many of the things that Christ calls us to as a church community simply can’t happen in our limited interaction on Sundays. We want to be involved in each other’s lives and encourage spiritual growth amid our day-to-day challenges. To that end, we have a variety of groups that meet during the week to provide more focused study and foster deeper relationships.

Ascension’s small groups are organized by geography, topic, or gender. Each group has 10-15 people and meets for about 90 minutes. Some groups facilitate fellowship events and service projects in addition to the regular meeting time.

Small groups meet during two terms: Fall (September to December) and Spring (January to May).

Participants sign-up for groups at the beginning of each term. If you are new to Ascension or missed the sign-ups, please contact the leader of the group you’re interested in to see if there is space available.

Monday Men’s Group

This group meets Monday evenings from 8:00 to 9:00pm at Charley Sabatier’s home in south central Arlington. This term we’re reading The Silence of Adam: Becoming Men of Courage in a World of Chaos by Larry Crabb. Contact Charley at CHSabatier@fcps.edu for more information.

The Falls Church Small Group

The Falls Church group meets at the Laushkins’ on Tuesday evenings at 7:30pm. We use the Compline service as a prayerful structure for our meetings. Within the structure we are discussing the prophetic book of Micah. Andrew Litke facilitates. For more information, please contact Danielle Hitchen at danielle.y.howe@gmail.com.

Central Arlington Small Group

This group is facilitated by Gwen D’Luzansky and meets Tuesday evenings at 7:30pm at Emily Rose and Lauren Vander Heyden’s home. The group discusses the content and application of the previous Sunday’s sermon as well as praying for both corporate and personal matters. Every fourth week the group takes a break from study to gather for a night of fellowship. For more information, please contact Gwen D’Luzansky at gwen.dluzansky@gmail.com.

Tuesday Night Luke Study

This group meets alternately at the Colsons’ and Carringtons’ (both in South Arlington) at 7:30pm on Tuesday evenings. Chuck Colson facilitates a study of readings from Luke as we use the Ascension daily devotional as a structure for our time. Please contact Anna Carrington for more information: Anna.L.Carrington@gmail.com.

Wednesday Women’s Bible Study

Women’s Bible Study meets on Wednesdays from 10:00 to 11:30am at Christ Church. Childcare is provided. We alternate three weeks of book discussion with one week of play group at various locations around Arlington. The book that we study serves as a launching point to discuss the implications of our faith on our lives as women, mothers, and wives. Past books have included ‘The Praying Life’ by Paul Miller, ‘Counterfeit Gods’ by Tim Keller, and ‘Choosing Rest’ by Sally Breedlove. This group starts January 9. For more information, contact Melissa Colson (mtcolson@gmail.com) or Michelle Griffith (griffith.michellej@gmail.com).

Friday Evening Women’s Fellowship

Women’s Fellowship meets every other Friday evening at 7:30pm, beginning Friday, January 11. This semester, we are continuing to read Tim Keller’s Gospel in Life series as a launching point for discussion. This series introduces a different topic every week, so newcomers are welcome! Beverages and light snacks are provided. This group is facilitated by Sarah Ortego and Ceci Choi and meets at the Ortegos’ home in Old Town. For more information, please contact Sarah at sarah.gelinas@gmail.com.

If you have any questions or want to join a small group, please contact Anna Carrington at smallgroups@theascension.org.
